Aware AI: Self-Improving AI

Yo, another day, another dollar – or should I say, another decimal point vanishing into the digital ether. The AI game, see, is changing faster than a Wall Street ticker on earnings day. We’re not just talking chatbots anymore. We’re talking machines that are supposedly learning to think for themselves. That’s right, self-improving AI. And this ain’t no sci-fi flick; cats like Dimitri Stojanovski over at Aware AI Labs are saying they’re already cookin’ something up. But ain’t nothin’ in this town is ever that simple, is it? Buckle up, ’cause we’re diving deep into this digital rabbit hole, where breakthroughs battle with ethical breakdowns, and fortunes are made (and lost) faster than you can say “artificial general intelligence.”

The Aware AI Heist: Cracking the Self-Aware Code

Aware AI Labs, they’re the new kids on the block, see? But they’re coming in hot, claimin’ they’ve cracked some part of the code to self-improving AI. This ain’t the ol’ pump-more-data-into-the-machine kinda deal. This is about gettin’ the machines to look inward, find their own weak spots, and then, bam, build themselves up, all on their own. Six stages, they’re sayin, like some kind of AI boot camp. It’s like, instead of me having to hit the books after gettin’ my butt kicked on a case, I could program my brain to automatically learn jujitsu. This is a clear departure from the old ways, where human intervention was the name of the game. Those big language models—LLMs, they like to call ’em—are powerful, sure, but there’s a growing worry they’re hitting a wall. They need to get smarter, not just bigger. So Aware AI is tryin’ to build AI that can think its way to success. It’s about internal evolution.

The OpenAI Exodus: Loyalty’s Price Tag

Now, here’s where it gets messy, folks. This whole AI gold rush is built on the backs of folks ditching the old guard for the new. OpenAI, the company that was supposed to save us all with friendly AGI, seems to have traded its halo for a shareholder-friendly suit. That’s turned off some of their best and brightest. So, they’re jumping ship, launching their own ventures, and raising piles of cash. Mira Murati, a big shot from OpenAI, she even started her own lab! It’s a regular talent piñata out there. They call themselves the ‘OpenAI Mafia’. Everyone wants to build their own AGI, with their values baked right in. All this innovation is great, sure, but it also ramps up the pressure. More powerful AI means more potential for things to go sideways.

The Philosophical Puzzle: What’s the Big Idea?

Let’s not forget the big question hanging over all this: what is “self-awareness,” anyway? Is it just lines of code mimicking human thought, or are we creating something truly conscious? This is where the philosophers come in, scratchin’ their heads and puffin’ on them pipes. Some say you need self-awareness for true AGI; others think we can get there without it, safely and slowly. It gets your head spinnin’ faster than a roulette wheel, but if self-awareness in AI becomes achievable then we may soon be able to use this type of AI in various important industry. This is already happening, for instance, AI crop and soil testing is a thing now. AI is already being used in recruitment and hiring, which makes it more important than ever to be aware of biases. The Center for Human-aware AI (CHAI) at RIT is trying to help make sure AI aligns with what we want as people! OpenAI is already competing with MICROSOFT!

Now, where does that leave us? Aware AI Labs, with their self-improving AI scheme, is clearly onto something. Its a wild card as they try to combine knowledge across multiple disciplines. But, all this progress must come with a healthy dose of caution. We need to look before we leap, understanding the ethical mess, making sure nobody gets hurt. The competition between AI labs is a dog-eat-dog kinda thing, and talent is the ammunition. But in the end, this AI race is shaping the future of our world, whether we like it or not.

Case closed, folks. For now.
